OVERVIEW

The acquisition or re-acquisition of a positive social role is not an objective that can be reached by chance or without a strategy; it needs a consistent and organized operation system with well defined principles and values which then translate into a structured process of help to the person, divided into steps and each step needs clear goals.

This procedure is called rehabilitative process and is divided in different activities and all these activities are needed and are necessary to reach the objective.

AIMS AND CONTENT

By the end of the lessons the student is expected to:

 

  • Have a deep knowledge of the methodology used by the Centre for Psychiatric Rehabilitation in Boston and by Spivak;
  • Know the different steps of the rehabilitative process: rehabilitative diagnosis, planning the steps and putting them into practice
  • Know how to plan, in a detailed way, a rehabilitative intervention within a community, a residential home and a day centre (semi-residential);
  • Know and be able to use the acquired knowledge in the different locations and situations where he/she will work and use these learned techniques;
  • Know in detail how to develop and plan a programme of integration in a possible work place starting form the candidate’s motivation and evaluation/assessment of his/her abilities;

Know the theoretical aspects and operational methodologies of interventions at home and in the local area.

TEACHING METHODS

Frontal lessons. Clinical exemplifications will be discussed throughout the lessons of the course and they will be important to complete and widen the ideas and the theoretical concepts discusses.

Part 1: rehabilitative process

  1. Rehabilitation process according to the Centre for Psychiatric Rehabilitation in Boston and according to Spivak
  2. Process of change
  3. Willingness and readiness to take part in rehabilitation process (motivation to change)
  4. Indicators of readiness to change (motivation to change)
  5. Develop readiness to rehabilitation (motivation to change)
  6. “Success without requests”
  7. Motivational activities
  8. Resistance to change
  9. Establishing a rehabilitative objective
  10. Evaluating the success of the programme
  11. Diagnosis of Social Competence and plan of treatment according to Spivak method
  12. Evaluation of resources
  13. Methods of teaching abilities
  14. Planning use of abilities
  15. “Adaptive dimension to the target” by Spivak

Part 2: areas of intervention of Psychiatric Rehabilitation: work

  1. Definition of a role in the work place
  2. Standing prejudices in the work place
  3. Impact of psychiatric disabilities on work performance: interpersonal area, cognitive area, emotional area, physical area
  4. Helps in the workplace
  5. Integration programmes in the workplace: candidate’s assessment

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The examination will be an oral interview

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The examination will be an oral interview and will be about the topics of the lessons; the examination purpose is to evaluate and assess whether the student has reached an appropriate degree of knowledge on the subject and also a good ability in expressing his/her personal and critical opinion on the topics.

The student is expected to show an expertise in the topics by using appropriate and specific words to define the method of the treatment, the techniques and the tools explained in the lessons throughout the course. The student’s ability to express ideas, opinions and communicative skills will be highly valued and will be regarded as very important.
