OVERVIEW

Internal medicine is the medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases, in particular of multi-system disease processes.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The objective of the course is to provide to midwifery students a basic knowledge of the main, and most common, medical conditions managed in Internal Medicine.

The student will approach fundamental concepts concerning the pathophysiology, epidemiology, clinical manifestations and treatment/prevention principles of the diseases presented during the course.

TEACHING METHODS

The course is articulated in 12 hours of frontal lecture.

 

For admission to the examination it is required that at least 75% of the lectures have been attended.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

  1. The “Internist's approach” to the patient (introduction, patient’s history, physical examination)
  2. Acute and chronic renal failure
  3. Asthma
  4. Hypertension
  5. Diabetes
  6. Atherosclerosis and related diseases (coronary disease, stroke, peripheral arterial disease)
  7. Deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism
  8. Bleeding Disorders
  9. Sexually Transmitted Infections
  10. Medical disorders during Pregnancy

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The assessment takes place only through the final exam which aims to ensure the effective acquisition by the student of the expected learning outcomes.

In order to pass the exam (vote of not less than 18/30) the student must demonstrate:

- Knowledge of the main approached topics

- Capability to discuss the presented subjects making connections among the different topics (intra- and interdisciplinary),

- Ability critically deal with the presented arguments;

- Use of an appropriate terminology.
