The Geriatric Nursing Course will provide the attendants with the geriatric fundamentals for integrated and global health care for the elderly patient, including preventive medicine, health promotion, family and caregiver education, nursing of the main diseases of the olds and end of life care.
The attendants the course will acquire: the ability to address the problems of the geriatric patient through general prevalence of elderly, the demographic changes, the knowledge of the main diseases in the olds, their prevention and prognosis, promotion of family health and education, comprehensice geriatric assessment, the Geriatric Evaluation Unit and the teamwork, the communication and relationship with the old patient and his family, the placement in the community and hospital network services for old care, the evidence-based nursing, the disability assistance and end-of-life care life.
The participants of the course will have to learn: the Italian and regional epidemiology of the aging population and hence the related health needs; The generality of the aging process; The theoretical-practical significance of fragility, its causes, and its clinical consequences; The characteristics of major geriatric syndromes; The promotion of health and the preventive medicine of the most frequent illnesses in the elderly; Drugs management and pain therapy, the nutrition issue and the sarcopenia; The problems of the old on the community and in the hospital wards, including problems related to the hospitalization. The acquisition of good relationship and communication with the elderly patient and his family; The knowledge of the health services network, its best use to properly locate and assist the elderly, the old people disabled, patients with dementia and at the end of their life; Personalized planning of care developed on the basis of comprehensice geriatric assessment and the identification of realistic and achievable goals; The role of the Geriatric Evaluation Unit; The nursing approach to depression, suicide, violence suffered by the patient or by the nurse.
