OVERVIEW

Pulmonary function testing plays a key role in diagnostic and clinical decision making processes of most respiratory and nonrespiratory diseases

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES (FURTHER INFO)

The aim of the course is the knowledge,  understanding and clinical application of pulmonary function tests (PFTs). Following the meaningful learning principle, students engaged have to learn with understanding the physiological mechanisms underpinning pulmonary function testing

TEACHING METHODS

  • Lectures (10 h of teacher-centred learning)
  • Hands-on sessions on equipment, playing of PFTs and quality control
  • Case-based learning
  • Assessment of competence

The attendance to the course is mandatory.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The topics that will be addressed by the course are the following:

  • Spirometry and lung volume measurement
  • Pulmonary diffusion of gases
  • Blood gas analysis
  • Bronchial challenge testing
  • Cardiopulmonary exercise testing
