OVERVIEW

The course provides a critical discussion of the evolution patterns of capitalism during the 20th  and  the 21st centuries in a wide comparative perspective centered on the three macro-regions: Asia, Europe, USA. It aims at understanding the working of the global financial environment and its governing institutions focusing on the elements which are at the base of the long run development of financial markets and institutions and their interconnections

The course aims at providing students with the theoretical and historical tools to grasp the main features of the discussed topics

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

-Capitalism: main theories

-Money: whence it came, where it went.

-Monetary systems, basic determinants

-Mercantilism in the Twenty-first  century. Europe, Germany and China

-The most important crises: an analysis

-Challenges to central banking from globalized financial systems

-Big players: Sovereign wealth funds and multinational firms

- Islamic finance

-Globalization in the multi-polar world

-The banking system
