OVERVIEW

The course aims to present with systemic and cross-disciplinary, methodological and technological aspects for the protection of electrical energy systems , with particular regard to new widespread and renewable generation scenario, including microgrids , the load control ( demand response ) and to storage systems.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

During the course proper design aspects of protection systems are analysed. The course is focues on the problems of integration between protection, control and telecommunications in light of the spread of distributed generation and the evolution of electrical distribution systems.

TEACHING METHODS

Combination of traditional lectures (50 hours) and classroom discussion of specific projects (10 hours).

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course deals with several issues on protection and management of electrical systems, in particular:

(1) Architectures of automation systems of distribution networks (DMS - Distribution Management Systhem): Analysis of the new monitoring and control capabilities of the distribution networks in the presence of renewable generation. (2) protection of the electrical systems: analysis in detail of the protections in the electrical systems (line protections, busbar protection, generator protection, protection of transformers, reactors of protections, back-up and protection of large areas for protections systems) . (3) protection of the communication-integrated system Analysis: architecture of the communication system, means of transmission, interfaces between protection and communication system, and performance and reliability of the communication system. (4) Analysis of IEC 61850 "Communication networks and systems in substation". (5) protection, control and substation automation. (6) Protection of distribution networks and industrial: integration of protection and control in light of the spread of distributed generation and renewable and conventional interconnect systems. (7) Modelling of the accumulation systems: analysis of the accumulation systems for the control of microgrid with strong presence of renewable. (8) Load management: the role of the electric load in the new scenario of the SmartGrid.
