AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

To provide to the students the bases of Thermodynamics and heat transfer needed for tackling problems related to energy engineering and applications concerning energy conversion, refrigeration, air conditioning, renewable energies.

TEACHING METHODS

The course in based on theoretical lectures (about 40 hours) numerical calculations for practical applications (about  15 hours).

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Introductory concepts and definitions in thermodynamics. Units for thermodynamic properties. Methodology for solving Thermodynamic problems. First law of Thermodynamics. Energy transfer by work and heat. Properties of the pure substance. Control volume energy analysis. Fundamentals of combustion and heating values. The second law of thermodynamics. Entropy and maximum efficiencies. The Rankine cycle and the environmental impact. Gas power systems. Refrigeration and heat pumps. Psycrometrics and air conditioning. One dimensional fluid-dynamics: the Bernoulli equation, friction factors and local pressure drop coefficients. Fundamentals of conduction, convection and radiation. Thermal resistance and overall heat transfer coefficient. Extended surfaces (fins). Forced and free convection. Heat transfer in buildings and energy savings. Radiation heat transfer: blackbody radiation, grey diffuse surfaces, environmental radiation, solar energy conversion. Heat exchangers and the recovery of thermal energy.
