CODE 66391 ACADEMIC YEAR 2017/2018 CREDITS 6 cfu anno 1 YACHT DESIGN 9268 (LM-34) - SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR ICAR/13 LANGUAGE English TEACHING LOCATION SEMESTER 2° Semester MODULES Questo insegnamento è un modulo di: YACHT DESIGN STUDIO WORKSHOP A OVERVIEW The correct design is directed towards the design of interior living and to the external characteristics of the boats is one of the parameters that determine the success of a product. To define the characteristics of environments intended to accommodate people, living units, car cockpits or yacht cabins, it is necessary to analyze and understand the architectural, ergonomic-dimensional, structural and perceptive elements that intervene to define its quality. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The unit deals with the design evolution, as well as the study of shapes and proportions in pleasure crafts. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The main objective is to get students to solve the composition and the general organization of a motor boat set up for owner's use. The morphological and functional research of cases and similar products is a useful approach to develop awareness of the topics dealt with, the environments and distributions to be preferred in relation to the use and to the formal and performance solutions to be observed. In this way the first part of the course is dedicated to the critical study of solutions already developed and proposed on the market, of particular functional, distributive, performance and innovation interest of the sector. The second part is dedicated more specifically to the exam theme, addressing the definition of the general plans, construction and definition of the character of the project proposal studied in groups of two to three students. The main theme is the analysis, the study and the planning of a concept of a pleasure boat with a motor of less than 24 meters, in particular towards non-usual types, that are distant for morphological, technical and distribution characteristics from traditional motor yachts hypothesizing a critical edesign in the form of a project (as complete as possible). The course is developed in the form of a workshop, with ex cathedra lessons followed by the implementation of the topics covered and specific reviews on the progress of the work. Particular attention is given to coordination during the practical application of the topics covered during the course and their mutual interactions with the research and the final project, while maintaining the control of the consistency between results and premises. TEACHING METHODS Within the course there are audits and ex cathedra lectures aimed at focusing the project needs and defining the issues dealt with during the course. In particular, immediately after the start of the course and the planning of the activities to be carried out, work is started on the exam theme, with the elaboration of a Book in A3 in which to summarize the elaborations. The elaborations are carried out in groups of two to three students. At the end of the classroom work, an elaborate vertical A1 is required for the exam. In this paper the last version of the project is presented, illustrated the genesis of the concept and represented all the elements useful for its description (general plans, profiles, sections, renderings, etc.). The goal, different from that of the book, was to present the final work and disseminate it to the public. For students the exam consists of a written test and an oral interview. During the exam the work of the year that concludes the individual exercise will be judged. Periodic checks will be carried out during the year in relation to the presentation of work in progress. SYLLABUS/CONTENT The program is aimed at the understanding of the composition and design techniques useful to fully solve the problems of the distribution of the environments and of the modeling of the hull and deck surfaces in relation to the ergonomics, the type of reference and the technology used. Phase 1: The first phase (March) was dedicated to carrying out a market research dedicated to identifying typical characteristics of a (about) 24 meter boat, identifying typical distributions, formal and stylistic expedients, engines, cabin dimensions, etc. This work is repeated by each group of students for multiple boats; for each, elaborations were requested at the end of the study period that included the metric and dimensional analysis of each environment, the analysis of the crossings, of the typical path, of the interactions between owners and crew, windows, etc. This is useful to form a particular conscience of what exists (and it is possible to improve) on the market. The final work is then evaluated and discussed in the classroom. Phase 2: The second phase (April-May) concerns the formulation of the concept and of the preliminary project; through the study of market analysis, we have come to isolate some possible intervention strategies on which to set the next project. In this way it was possible to exit from the conventional schemes and hypothesize modifications, solutions and distributive hypotheses freely. In this way the "character" to be given to the boat and its expressive and functional possibilities are brought into focus. An important step is that of the careful verification of the real possibility of introducing these modifications into a real boat. In this sense, students are required to verify the hypotheses geometrically, functionally and distributively, and to derive solutions, assessing at the same time the "consequences" on the final product in plants and in scaled sections, referring to typical geometries. In this part we are dedicated to refining the geometry of the project, the paths and the distributions descending scale and referring to a real hull in 3D. Different types of example construction plans are provided. In this way, each group of students could deal with a hull, modifiable within certain limits, but responsive to their project briefing. The elaboration then foresees in sequence the design of the general plans, starting from the plants, and from the longitudinal sections, arriving to build the cross sections and at the end the external profiles and the 3D views. The final work is then delivered and discussed in the classroom. Each phase is supported by classroom communications regarding the steps to be taken and specific suggestions combined with "readings" of the characteristics of the boats in the studio. Inside the course there is also a visit to a shipyard (Riva, Pçicchiotti, Baglietto etc ... depending on availability) at La Spezia, where you can see the production chains of boats similar to that in the studio.
