OVERVIEW

SPECIAL FOUNDATIONS - Module

Module of the Course : Soil and Rock Mechanics and Foundation Engineering

Course leader: Riccardo Berardi

Course Code: 84540

Scientific Sector (MIUR):  ICAR/07 Geotechnics

Credits: 5

Degree: MSc  in Civil and Environmental Engineering – First year – 2nd Semester

AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Course aims

The main objective is to supply capabilities for designing and verifying foundations (shallow and deep) and retaining structures (gravity walls, diaphragm walls, special earth retaining structures). Soil improvement methods for foundation applications are treated as well.

Learning outcomes

Choice of the most suitable foundation type. Analysis and design of foundations and retaining structures.

TEACHING METHODS

This module uses lectures, tutorial exercises, case histories.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

  • Deep foundations. Types and construction methods. Single pile under axial loading: bearing capacity and settlement. Loading tests. Group of piles.  Single pile under horizontal loading: bearing capacity and settlement. Shafts.
  • Shallow foundations: soil-foundation-structure interaction. Structural design of plinths, foundation beams, rafts.
  • Earth Retaining structures: Types. At-rest, active, passive lateral earth pressure. Earth pressures due to surface loads. Earth pressure for design. Gravity retaining walls. Diaphragm walls: Cantilever and anchored retaining structures. Special Structures. Soil diplacements due to deep excavation and consequences on existing buildings. Reinforced soil as retaining walls: principles.
  • Ground Anchors in retaining structures
  • Soil improvment methods in foundation applications: Preloading, vertical drains and radial consolidation; soil compaction; soil stabilization; jet grouting and deep mixing

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

 Oral and written examination.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Oral examination: Questions are posed intended to establish the theoretical knowledge of the topics.

Written examination: the students, divided into groups, will have to prepare a technical report on the design of a foundation and /or reatining structures, starting from soil characterization, having available data from a real case history (geological investigation, soundings, laboratory and in situ tests, load combinations, etc.)
