The course analyzes the evolution of the novel in France from its origins to the twentieth century.It focuses on the main authors and currents through the analysis of anthological texts,read and commented and taken from the most significant works.The program includes three complete works: Mme de Lafayette,Princesse de Clèves;Voltaire,Candide;Maupassant,Bel-Ami.Non-attending students will choose a manual among those proposed in the bibliography and read the three complete works mentioned above.
At the end of the course the student knows the general lines of the history of literature, he is able to read and understand texts in the language and is started to the use of methods and basic analytical tools, to interpret the works of the main authors, contextualizing them in the culture and in the historical period of reference.

PROGRAM A for attending students (monitored frequency - at least 75% of attendance) The course will focus on the development of narrative writing in the French context with precise reference to schools and literary movements that have followed one another from the origins to the present day. ANTHOLOGICAL TEXTS: the texts that will be read and analyzed during the lessons will be published on the e-learning portal of the University (aulaweb) and will constitute exam material. The final list of texts will be published on aulaweb at the end of the course. READINGS OF THREE NOVELS:

EXAMENS BLANCS: 3 tests will be administered in itinere (examens blancs) to be performed in the classroom and followed by the correction. Thanks to the wifi coverage the tests can be performed from your mobile phone. The dates will be communicated via aulaweb.
PROGRAM B FOR NON-ATTENDING students History of the French novel from the origins to the twentieth century studied on a french literature manual. FRENCH LITERATURE AND CULTURE I
Oral exam
The exam will consist in an oral examination in French or Italian on the contents of the course, through questions formulated by the Commission.
FOR ATTENDING STUDENTS (frequency monitored: 75% of attendance) The candidate must choose an anthological extract from those scheduled and will have a few minutes to prepare it. Following the presentation of the contents of the text, at least one question will be asked of the candidate concerning the three novels read. In the assessment of the exam will be taken into account, as well as the knowledge of the program to be performed (topics covered in class, reading and analysis of texts proposed during lessons, materials made available on the platform aulaweb and readings of the full texts), also of the oral skills and accuracy in the use of the specific language of the discipline.
FOR NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS: The candidate must demonstrate to know the history of the french novel from its origins to the twentieth century. The candidate will have to demonstrate that he has read the three complete works and be able to explain its contents, the literary and generic characteristics, the authorial and stylistic specificities in relation to the period and to the author's literary movement / school. In the assessment of the exam will take into account, as well as the knowledge of the program to be carried out, also the oral skills and accuracy in the use of the specific language of the discipline.
