OVERVIEW

SEMANTICS AND TRANSLATION TECHNIQUES

The course is a 12-credits-course  consisting  of

- a theoretical module of 36 hours (2nd semester)

- an applied module of 20 hours aiming to provide students with advanced skills of German-Italian translation;

- an applied module of 20 hours aiming to provide students with advanced skills of Italian-German translation;

- an applied module of 40 hours aiming to provide students with basic skills of interpreting (German-Italian)

AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

- knowledge of the most important theories of linguistic semantics

- a good command of the different aspects of word semantics (metaphors, neologisms etc.)

- mastery of the tools relevant to translation (dictionaries, corpora, databases, translation software)

- insight into the main translation theories

- ability to apply appropriate techniques in the translation process

- ability to analyse the grammatical and semantic structures of German texts in order to produce adequate functional translations

- Kenntnisse der wichtigsten Theorien der linguistischen Semantik

- Vertrautheit mit unterschiedlichen Aspekten der Wortsemantik (Metaphern, Okkasionalismen etc.)

- Fähigkeit, geeignete Hilfsmittel für Übersetzungen angemessen zu verwenden (Wörterbücher, Korpora, Datenbanken, Übersetzungssoftware etc.)

- Kenntnisse der fundamentalen Übersetzungstheorien

- Fähigkeit angemessene Übersetzungstechniken in der Praxis anzuwenden

- Befähigung zur grammatischen und semantischen Textanalyse im Hinblick auf die Fertigkeit der angemessenen funktionalen Textübersetzung

TEACHING METHODS

Lecture with language exercises

The theory lectures (36 lessons) will be accompanied in the second term by practical exercises in translation from Italian to German and from German to Italian as well as by interpreting exercises (see programs published in Aulaweb and on the websites of the single instructors that will be announced in October 2017). All single classes will take place in the second term (February-May 2018).

Lessons will be held in German language.

Vorlesung mit begleitenden Sprachübungen (Lektorat)

Die theoretischen Lektionen (36 Stunden) werden im 2. Semester von praktischen Übungen zur Übersetzung Italienisch-Deutsch, Deutsch-Italienisch und zum Dolmetschen flankiert  (s. Programme in der Aulaweb und auf den Webseiten der einzelnen Dozenten, die im Oktober 20167bekannt gegeben werden). Alle Teilkurse finden im 2. Semester (Februar-Mai 2018) statt.

Die Unterrichtseinheiten werden in deutscher Sprache durchgeführt.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

In the theory class students will be acquainted with some important areas of German linguistics, such as linguistic semantics and translation studies, as far as these are relevant to the practical aspects of translation and interpreting. In addition, translation strategies and techniques will be introduced and discussed, focusing particularly on contrastive aspects between German and Italian.

The program of the course is valid until February 2018 in accordance to the departmental regulation.

Im Theoriemodul sollen die Studenten mit einigen wichtigen Subdisziplinen der Linguistik der deutschen Sprache vertraut gemacht werden, insbesondere mit der linguistischen Semantik und der Translatologie, insofern diese für die Übersetzungstheorie und -praxis und für das Dolmetschen relevant sind. Außerdem werden Übersetzungsstrategien und -techniken vorgestellt und diskutiert, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf sprachkontrastiven Aspekten (Italienisch/Deutsch) liegt.

Das Programm ist gemäß der Studienordnung bis Februar 2018 gültig.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Modalities of exam: The translation exercises will be completed by written exams and the interpreting lessons by an oral exam. At the final oral exam at the end of the theory class, students will have to provide evidence of their thorough knowledge of the subjects dealt with during the lessons, the required texts and the materials posted on Aulaweb. During the oral exam at the end of the theory class the students have to bring forward an argument by their own choice and to provide evidence of their profound knowledge of the arguments dealt with during the lessons, of the designed texts and of the materials published in Aulaweb. Part of the exam evaluation consists in the capability to express scientific arguments adequately in German language.

Prüfungsmodalitäten: In der mündlichen Prüfung nach Abschluss des Theoriemoduls und an den darauf folgenden Prüfungsdaten werden die während des Kurses behandelten Themen geprüft. Die Übersetzungsübungen schließen mit schriftlichen Prüfungen ab und der Dolmetschunterricht mit einer mündlichen Prüfung. Während der mündlichen Prüfung nach Abschluss des Theoriemoduls soll die Kandidatin/der Kandidat ein selbst gewähltes Thema präsentieren und anschließend auf Fragen zu den während des Semesters behandelten Themen antworten. Darüber hinaus werden in der Abschlussprüfung auch Kenntnisse der angegebenen Lektüren und der in der Aulaweb zur Verfügung gestellten Materialien abgeprüft. In die Abschlussnote fließt auch die Bewertung der Fähigkeit ein, die Prüfungsinhalte angemessen in deutscher Sprache darzustellen.

Language level B2 in German language is required for participation.

The exam is obligatory for students in the third year of the course of studies in Theories and techniques of language mediation. Attendance is obligatory according the study regulations (s. Manifesto degli Studi).

Voraussetzung für die Teilnahme am Kurs ist das Niveau B2 (GERS) in der deutschen Sprache

Die Prüfung ist obligatorisch für die Studenten des 3. Jahres des Studienganges "Theorien und Techniken der Sprachmittlung. Es besteht Anwesenheitspflicht gemäß der Studienordnung (s. Manifesto degli Studi).
