AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Translation module: Italian into Spanish translation course with in-depth analysis of translation procedures and contrastive morphosyntactic structures.

Liaison Interpreting module: the module (with a professional approach) has the purpose of training interpreting skills for dialogue interpreting to apply effective strategies for the Italian-Spanish language combination.

The linguistics module aims to enable students to develop the following skills:

  • the critical analysis of the recommended bibliography and of the topics dealt with during the semester;
  • the capacity of mastering contents and techniques learnt throughout the three years;
  • the application of practical technical tools and skills regarding oral and writing translation, with a special interest on the translator/interpreter’s role and on the problem-strategy pair.

TEACHING METHODS

Contact hours (see above for more details) + continuous follow-up and assignments on the Aulaweb platform.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Linguistics module: it will deal with the following topics (among others): pragmatics, also from a sociocultural and intercultural point of view regarding translation and interpreting; some “dilemmas” of translators and interpreters.

Interpreting: the module has an oral final test (2 exams for every session: summer, autumn and winter sessions) that consists in a dialogue interpreting simulation in one of the two fields dealt with during the course, and in a sight translation (es-it; it-es)) in the field opposite to the dialogue interpreting simulation. During the exam it will be possible to use a list of terms created with the help of the teachers during the module. Finally, the exam will consist also in a self-assessment comment like the ones done in class. To do this part of the exam it is necessary to have passed the written translation test. Assessment criteria: evaluation parameters of the final test are basically three: -Language: Italian and Spanish language mastering; -“How”: verbal, non-verbal and para-linguistic language; - Contents: functional equivalence, accuracy, adequacy and usability. Assessment will take into consideration also the two home works (list of terms and interpreter evaluation).

Translation module: translation of various text types. In order to sit on the final test a variable amount (between three to five) of written activities (homework) will be required.

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

The bibliography will be made available on the Aulaweb platform at the beginning of the course (second semester, February).
