French literature 2: the development of the French drama

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

To provide knowledge on the outline of the history of French theater and playwriting. At the end of the course the student is able to read and understand texts in language and is initiated using the methods and basic analytical tools to interpret the works of the main authors, contextualizing them in culture and historical period .

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

PROGRAM A monitored attendance (75%)

The course will focus on the development of theatrical writing in French context with specific reference to schools and literary movements that have occurred from 1600 to the present days. It will make constant reference to the reading of theoretical texts and texts by French-Italian contrastive analysis.
Major movements and authors that will be discussed:

Les origines du théâtre français
Le théâtre à l'époque classique: La comédie de Molière, la tragédie de Corneille et Racine
Le théâtre  au 18e siècle: la comédie de Marivaux et Beaumarchais, le drame bourgeois de Denis Diderot
Le théâtre romantique - Hugo, Musset
Naturalisme et symbolisme - Renouveau de la scène
Le théâtre à la Belle époque - théâtre de boulevard, Alfred Jarry, Antoine, Lugné Poe
Le Cartel des quatre - Antonin Artaud
Le théâtre existentialiste - Sartre et Camus
Le Nouveau théâtre - Beckett, Genet, Ionesco

Anthological text selection: the texts that will be read and explained during the lectures will be published on the e-learning portal of the University (aulaweb) and will constitute an examination subject. The final list of readings will be published on aulaweb at the end of the course.

Works: four pièces choosen  with the professor among those presented in class. Students must inform the professor about their choice at least a month before the exam in the space of Aulaweb.

GROUP WORK on the analysis of the translation of a play will be performed during the course. Terms of participation and content will be presented in class and will of aulaweb.

Program B 

History of the French Theater from the beginning to the twentieth century included studied in the Manual in the bibliography.
Reading of 6 texts (chosen from those in the list that will be published on Aulaweb at the beginning of the course, which you will need to be able to make a critical presentation according to the sheet in the list).

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Oral exam, preceded by a test for non attending students

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The exam will consist of an oral test in French on the course contents through questions from the Commission.

Attending students: The candidate will have to choose an anthology extract of those in the program and will have twenty minutes to prepare. Following exposure of the contents of the text, it will be asked to the candidate at least one question for each of the areas and periods treated. In examination assessment will be taken into account, as well as knowledge of the program to be performed (topics covered in class, reading and analysis of texts proposed during the lessons, the materials made available on aulaweb platform and readings of three full texts) also the exhibition and accuracy skills in the use of the specific discipline language.

Non attending students:
The candidate must demonstrate the knowledge of the program that will be attested by a computer test prepared by the teacher. Only those who have received a score of 8/10 could take the oral test. During the exam the candidate must demonstrate that he has read the texts and is able to disclose its content, literary and generic features, stylistic features in relation to the author's and the period and movement or literary school. In the evaluation of the examination, besides the knowledge of the program to be carried out, the ability to exhibit and the accuracy in the use of the specific language of the discipline will be taken into account.
