The main objective of the course is to enable future teachers to understand that health education is a primary educational need. Awareness that prevention is fundamental to maintaining the health of a population is essential; it is therefore necessary to ensure that individuals acquire the knowledge that they need in order to make correct, well-informed health choices. Health education should therefore be included among the educational activities carried out in infant and primary schools.
Acquisition of the basic concepts of health education and of health promotion. Understanding the importance of the prevention of both infectious diseases and chronic-degenerative illnesses. Acquisition of the basic concepts of environmental health and health at school.
At the end of the course, students must possess adequate knowledge of the principal concepts of health promotion and disease prevention. They must therefore show that they have understood that prevention is fundamental to safeguarding the health of both the individual and the community.
Students must be able to apply the knowledge that they have acquired and must have the skills required in order to design and construct educational intervention for health promotion or disease prevention in the infant school or primary school.

The concept of health. Health promotion. Healthcare and health education. Elements of epidemiology. Primary, secondary and tertiary prevention. Epidemiology and prevention of the principal infectious diseases, with particular reference to those of childhood and adolescence. Notions of the epidemiology and prevention of chronic-degenerative illnesses. Promotion of healthy lifestyles in childhood and adolescence in order to safeguard health in adulthood. Planning of programs for health promotion and disease prevention in the infant school and primary school (according to the age). School hygiene. Elementary first aid.

HIGIENICS AND HEALTH EDUCATION
Obligatory written examination consisting of 30 “closed-answer” questions with only one correct answer and of one “open” question. Oral examination on request by the student, in order to improve the score obtained in the written examination. Assessment of the educational projects carried out during group activities.
The written format has been adopted in order to ensure that the knowledge acquired during the entire course is assessed in an objective manner. This modality is deemed to be able to correctly evaluate the achievement of both the general and specific training objectives.
