OVERVIEW

This course is meant for students who wish to be active in the field of cultural production, taken broadly, with the goal to reestablish an awareness of the ways in which cultural artefacts are made and preserved specifically in reference to their treatment in museums and cultural institutes.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

To provide students with the methods, analytical tools and essential knowledge to understand dynamic and appropriate management of private and/or public museums and cultural institutes. The methods take into account the current constantly evolving state of the management systems at cultural institutes, the ever growing complexity of the regulatory framework, the reaffirmed centrality of cultural initiatives such as promotion and the development of community life.

TEACHING METHODS

In-class lectures with visual aids such as PowerPoint plus in-class discussion.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course consists of an introduction meant to clarify terms, plus four modules based on four different but closely interrelated themes.

The four modules are:

  1. Regulations: This module examines Italian legislation regarding cultural artifacts, it analyzes the regulations applied to state, municipal and private museums.   It includes an overview of the evolution of regulation covering public museum management as well as an overview of regulations on workplace security.
  2. Economics/Finance: This module includes a budget analysis of independent museums or cultural institutes, an examination of the general principles and structure of the civil budget as well as an examination of the general principles that inform bookkeeping at state and municipal museums. There will be some theoretical and practical case studies including an overview of ideas of the “social budget”, fund raising, regulations on investment incentives in the field of public cultural artifacts called “Art bonus”.
  3. Organization and Technical Operations: This module focuses on the management and organization of human resources and the protection and enjoyment of museums, including creating organizational charts and examining the evolution of the organization of work. We will focus on the organization and management of services related to museum management: ticket office, bookshop, gift shop, educational activities, conferences and cultural activities. We will analyze the managerial plan of an exhibition that requires the technical/organizational management of loaning works of art.
  4. Area Marketing and Communication: includes the discussion of notions and elements of strategic marketing focusing on the field of communication for museums and exhibits as well as an overview on the role of the press office and social networks.

 

These modules can be integrated through accounts, practical cases and site visits
