OVERVIEW

«Philologists have the task of conserving the ancient meaning of the text that they are materially preserving. Therefore they have to act as mediators between the text and the community». The course aims to put this definition by Heinrich Lausberg into practice by applying it to a different specific text every year and experimenting with how to do a critical edition in practice.

It is advisable for students to have taken the Italian philology course during the three year degree course but it is not obligatory.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Programme for students taking the course for 6 cfu

a) Institutional elements of Italian philology

The first part of the course analyses the problems of critical editions of Italian literature texts and outlines the basic elements of method necessary to constitute a critically reliable text from a philological point of view.

b) Eros e Priapo by Carlo Emilio Gadda - art philology and text reconstruction

The second part of the course examines the recent edition of the anti-Mussolini pamphlet, Eros e Priapo by Carlo Emilio Gadda in order to tackle some issues relating to twentieth century philology. In particular, the implications raised by this specific, emblematic case (dissent between the author’s will and the editor’s will, signed editions, chronological stratification of different competing drafts) will be analysed.
