OVERVIEW

Romance philology studies the formation of languages that evolved from Latin during its expansion. In addition to this evolution and the languages that were born on this basis, the initial forms of literature born from these languages are studied (especially French and Italian). Thus medieval literature that promoted new types of invention and expression (e.g. novels about King Arthur) will be studied.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Analysing the knowledge of the origin and evolution of romance languages (limited to the medieval era), and related literature, witnesses that preserve its finds, as well as ways and methods of keeping, understanding and editing them. 

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

French medieval literature (in langue d’oïl) dedicated numerous texts to parody, both as a satire of courtly society and as a reflection on modes of writing and composing texts. The course mainly examines these texts and methods beginning with some French texts (novels, fables etc). Another section of the course is dedicated to narrative texts and their good fortune in romance literature, especially in relation to 13th and 14th century Italian literature.These topics, which are quite specific, contribute to moulding a good cultural approach for school teaching and for work in the area of Cultural Assets, both literary and artistic (essential for example for Italian painting from the 13th-16th centuries).

The course will take place in the second semester (February-May) for 6 hours weekly divided into lessons lasting 2 hours each.

Medieval French literature in Italian Medieval literature

N.B. Students who take the exam for 6 credits must attend (and study) only TWO parts of the course (that is parts I and II, or I and III or II and III).
