AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Theoretical / Practical Course: Foundations of modern biomedical systems, knowledge necessary to understand the functioning of diagnostic biomedical instrumentation, acquisition tools of biomedical data;  processing of biomedical data

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course will examine some types of instrumentation for the acquisition of biomedical signals with particular reference to imaging diagnostic equipment and the processing of biomedical data. Describes operational principles, design issues, state of the art, and future prospects for further development, taking into account the problems of interaction with the human body and patient safety.

TEACHING METHODS

Combination of traditional lectures (80 hours) and practice at the computer activities (16 hours).

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Architecture and performance of a biomedical measurements system. Characteristics of the main biomedical signals. Ultrasonic instrumentation: A-mode/ B-mode/ M-mode ultrasound, Doppler flow meters. Optical microscopy, fluorescence and confocal microscopy. Biomedical instrumentation: system radiography (X-ray, CT scan), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), EEG. Processing of biomedical images: punctual and local operations, filtering, co-registration, display systems, segmentation, pattern recognition, three dimensional reconstruction.
