The course introduces students to the analysis and development of Operations Research models and methods applied to the tourism field. Particular focus will be given to the basics of revenue management problems and applications.
The course aims to provide students with the knowledge and the most significant models and methods of operations research applied to tourism enterprises and, with particular attention to revenue management problems.
Objective of the course is the presentation of methodological aspects and applications in order to provide students with knowledge of the available solution methods and specific software. At the end of the course students should have acquired skills that will enable them to address the real problems, developing original resolution methods and using the required software environments.
Lectures, analysis of case studies, seminars, computer lab exercises and lessons using application software.
For each part of the course, the theoretical discussion, intended to provide basic content, will be complemented by the practical/laboratory content provided in the computer classroom through the use of Excel and other appropriate software tools.
Part I: - Operational Research (OR) for Service Management and Organizational Quality: How to Optimize Business Processes. Applications of OR to tourism. - Introduction to decision-making and problem solving: from real problems to decision models. Development phases of an Operations Research Study.
Part II: - Forecasting models and methods, regression techniques, seasonality and smoothing. - Revenue management. The Revenue Management Process: Historical Data Collection, Segmentation, Optimization, Benchmarking. Hotel revenue management. - Pricing models and techniques.
Part III: - Demand / Supply models and Distribution models. - Selection and staffing problems - Timetabling - Tourist itineraries planning and fleet scheduling problems

OPERATIONAL RESEARCH FOR TOURISM AND REVENUE MANAGEMENT
The achievement of the expected learning outcomes is assessed by a written examination in English and a practical test in the computer room or the execution of a project (individual or by groups).
The written test is intended to assess the level of knowledge and learning of the topics discussed in the lesson. While critical content processing and applying acquired knowledge are evaluated through project work or practical testing. If the student does not pass the exam or returns less than his / her expectations, he / she may repeat the exam at most three times for each exam session. That is, the call jump is only foreseen in the exam session with 4 exams.
