Course description
The course continues the work begun in the first year. The major theories in pragmatics will be investigated in greater breadth and depth, with an emphasis on the social aspects of communication. The workings of the theories will be illustrated by applying them in the analysis of complete or ‘long’ texts in order to be able to better account for the socio-cultural and contextual aspects of communication.
Inductive. Students must participate actively in lessons (held in English) by commenting on examples and texts, from which the theory is induced.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE (2ND YEAR)
The student must first pass the exam of the practical module. Only then can he take the exam of the theoretical module. The latter exam consists in explaining those theories and subsequently analysing an extract .employing the theoretical constructs acquired during the course. Students will be given time to prepare the text before the oral examination begins.
Attendance
Students are encouraged to attend regularly, since the two main factors in successful language learning are motivation and exposure to the language. Practice is essential.
