The course aims to provide the basic knowledge necessary for the understanding of the main physical phenomena interesting the yacht design, in particular approaching the study of the energy systems thermodynamics and the heat transfer.
The aim of the course is the training of a person able to analyze and solve simple problems in different fields of applied physics (applied thermodynamics, heat transfer, acoustics and lighting) while helping to acquire a proper scientific-technical language.
The aim of the course is the training of a person able to solve simple math problems of thermodynamics and heat transfer, while helping to acquire a proper scientific-technical language, as an essential tool either to understand technical documentation or to talk with several actors in the designing and manufacturing processes of the pleasure boats. Preliminary and essential to the study of physical phenomena is the familiarity with the physical dimensions of the mechanics and the relative units of measurement: the same are recalled in fact in the introductory part of the course. The course then addresses the main topics of technical thermodynamics, through the analysis of thermodynamic systems and energy exchanges that characterize them. Following is the study of the main mechanisms of heat exchange, conduction, convection and thermal radiation. With the aim of favoring an adequate critical knowledge of the phenomena, numerical exercises are also provided for the resolution of simple problems.
The following basic mathematical knowledge is necessary to effectively address the teaching content.
In order to face the resolution of simple numerical problems, it is also necessary to have an adequate familiarity in the use of a scientific calculator.
Teaching is carried out by alternating theoretical lessons with practical/numerical exercises.
The main topics discussed are the following.
GENERAL PHYSICS RECALLS: mechanics, static of fluids, notes of electricity.
TECHNICAL THERMODYNAMICS: thermodynamic systems, temperature, heat, mechanical work, first principle of thermodynamics for closed and open systems, notes on the second principle of thermodynamics, thermodynamic properties of pure substances, dynamics of fluids.
HEAT TRANSFER: conduction, convection, thermal radiation, combined heat transfer mechanisms.

In the aulaweb of the course, additional teaching materials are made available to students, including handouts for the topic "General physics recalls", the complete reference bibliography, proposed and solved exercises, texts of past exams, etc.).
Ricevimento: The indicative office hours for students are on Tuesday, at the Polo di La Spezia, and on Wednesday, at the Genoa teacher office (a Skype connection is also possible). In all cases, interested students must make an appointment by sending an email at least two days in advance.
