OVERVIEW

The course starts with the study of the dimension and the shape of the Earth, including its gravity field, also exploiting physico-mathematical methods, with the main purpose of setting up the theoretical basis for the precise, local and global, positioning of its points and of their cartographic representation.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

To provide the students with the necessary notions and concepts to make them able to correctly understand and interpret basic geodetic and cartographic results and products. That purpose is aimed at also by exploiting the interdisciplinary character of Geodesy, which rests on such sciences as Mathematics, Physics and also covers the basis for the mathematical treatment of Cartography

TEACHING METHODS

Front lessons with the aid of projected transparencies.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The shape of the earth. Geoid and biaxial ellipsoid as figures of the Earth. Least squares geodetic adjustment of direct equally precise and unequally precise observations. The motion of the Earth. Astronomic coordinates and reference frames. Time: definition and classification in geodetic astronomy. Height definitions: dynamic and orthometric heights. Tide gauges. Vertical datums and chart datums. Trigonometric leveling and geometric leveling. Global geodetic reference systems. Methods of geodetic positioning via GNSS (GPS).

Reference surfaces (ellipsoid/sphere) for Cartography. The cartographic problem: mapping from ellipsoid/sphere to the plan. Linear, surface and angular deformations. Conformal mappings. Mercator projection. Gauss projection and National cartography. Gnomonic and Stereographic projection.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Two written tests examinations during the course, whose results determine, via a weighted mean, to the final exam’s grade; one (optional) final oral examination whose result contributes, via a weighted mean, to the final exam’s grade.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

via the two written tests.
