OVERVIEW

The course of Geriatrics for healthcare workers provides to the student the basic notions  in the technical tools of prevention, information and activities in the prevention, verification and control of hygiene and environmental safety. For this activity during the Geriatrics course, the students will acquire appropriate information and skills on the geriatric patient and its problems both in the community and during hospitalization.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The student havs to acquire the ability to address the problems of the geriatric patient through several tools: general notions of prevalence and knowledge of disease issues, their prevention and prognosis, patient assessment, allocation ability in the services network  and ability to teamwork.

The student should learn about the Italian and regional demographic framework; The aging process of the human body and in particular social aging and the prevention of aging; The characteristics of successful aging; They will face the theoretical and practical significance of frailty, the causes, and the clinical consequences of it; The characteristics of major geriatric syndromes; The problems of the older inthe community and in the hospital, including the problems of hospital restraint and hospitalization problems. It will be important the acquisition of a good communication. A crucial element is the knowledge of the network of the regional health service, its best use to properly and effectively place the geriatric patient, but also the old-old patient. It is also worth noting  the learning of the most common multidimensional scales, the comprehensive geriatric assessment and the role of Geriatric Evaluation Unit and Geriatric Rehabilitation in evaluating and recruiting the elderly. Students will be able to address the problems associated with dementia, the dying old patient, the patient at risk of suicide, and the patient who has been subjected to violence.

TEACHING METHODS

Teorical lessons and clinical practical training in community, acute care, intermediate care and outpatient office.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Demography of aging; Aging of organs and systems, social aging and successful aging; The concept of frailty, its evaluation and its clinical consequences; The large geriatric syndromes, the frequent clinical cases in community and  in the hospital and the possible adverse events during hospital stay; Communication with the old patient; The particular problems of old and old-old; Disability in the elderly; the issues related to dementia, chronic-degenerative diseases, violence (against oneself or others), suicide risk and death.
