OVERVIEW

The course starts to the study of the marine floors and underlying layers with features, sediments, structures and morphodynamics of the ocean basin with particular reference to the seafloor nature, marine and coastal sediment environments and geomorphology, marine geotechnics, acoustics and high resolution seismic stratigraphy. An integrated approach is fundamental to study Sedimentology, Stratigraphy, Sedimentary Processes referring to the Hydrographic International Standards.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

To provide the students an integrated view of sea floor with the necessary notions and concepts to make them able to correctly analyse and interpret seabed and sub-seabed nature and features with acoustics and high resolution seismic stratigraphy, sediment properties and morphodynamics of the ocean basin. That purpose is aimed at also by the exploitation of an integrated approach between geophysics and geological data to product a seabed mapping.

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures and guided exercises

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Seafloor nature; Marine and Coastal Geomorphology; Seabed sampling; Marine geotechnics and sediment properties; Acoustics in the sediments; Principles of sedimentology and sedimentary cycle; Acoustic backscatter and seabed mapping; Marine and coastal environments and high resolution seismic stratigraphy.
