OVERVIEW

The course starts to the study of the marine and ocean basins floors and underlying layers with features, sediments, structures and morphodynamics of the ocean basin. In particular the recent technological growth and the use of high resolution seismic stratigraphy are fundamental in the study of the ocean basins referring to the classical and applied Marine Geology. The evolution and the history of the basins are the base of the knowledge and an important help to a wide view of the oceans

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

To provide the students an integrated view of the evolution of the oceanic and sea floor basins with the necessary notions and concepts to make them able to correctly analyse and interpret stratigraphy with particular reference to the seismic stratigraphy referring to the sedimentary processes and the geological evolution of the ocean basins. That purpose is aimed at also by the exploitation of an integrated and applied approach between geophysics and geological data referring to Mediterranean case histories.

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures and guided exercises

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Basic concept of plate tectonics in the context of the ocean basin evolution. Continental drift and sea-floor spreading. Lithological cycles and rock types classification. Continental margin records: tectonics evolution and sedimentary dynamics. Processes and products of sediment erosion and transport on continental margin. Offshore sedimentary dynamics: case histories. Near shore geological processes and the offshore. Littoral system: sedimentary processes and dynamics evolution. Coastal hazards: erosion, sea level-rise, flow gravity mass, turbidity current, tsunami, flood. High resolution seismic stratigraphy and applied Marine Geology case histories.
