OVERVIEW

With general pharmacology the student will learn the principles regarding the absorption, the distribution, the metabolism and the elimination of meds, and will have to know the role played by interindividual differences regarding sex, age, genetic characteristics and pathological conditions.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

First didactic-formative goal is gaining the attitude to consider medicine as an intrument for medical practice, that interacts with specific constituents of the body and causes effect that modify the health state of the patient. The student will learn the therapeutic basis and the administration of the most important medicines; in particular they'll have to know pharmacodynamic, pharmacokinetic, side effects, interactions and the toxicological aspects of the main classes of meds. The course also provides elements of etnopharmacology.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

With general pharmacology the student will learn the principles regarding the absorption, the distribution, the metabolism and the elimination of meds, and will have to know the role played by interindividual differences regarding sex, age, genetic characteristics and pathological conditions. They will also have to know the general mechanism of side effects, with particular regard to the medicine-receptor interaction. They will have to know the pharmacokinetic characteristics of drugs, the selection criteria, the ways of administring, the side effects, the potential favourable and harmful interactions. The student will have to learn the neurotransmission of the pain stimulus to learn to use the various classes of painkillers as best as they can. Finally, the student will need to know the principles of self-centered nervous system transmission (SNA) and the drugs that control, through this and other systems, respiratory diseases.
