This teaching deals with the study of plant diversity in marine and coastal environment, a key element in the formation of marine scientists.
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to marine plants and their biology and ecology . The course will include training in the identification of the algae and seagrasses with emphasis on the major groups and species of Mediterranean Sea.

Introduction to Cyanophyta. The biology and diversity of main red algae (Rhodophyta). Characteristics and diversity of Heterokontophyta, with emphasis on Diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) and main brown algae (Phaeophyceae). Biology, structure, systematic and importance of green algae (Chlorophyta). Introduction to other main phytoplanktonic taxa. A first approach to marine fungi. Characteristics of seagrasses, with emphasis on morphology, biology and importance of the most common species found in the Mediterranean Sea. Introduction to structure and function of marine plant communities. Introduction to coastal vegetation (shores, salt marshes, mangroves etc.).
