Provide students with an adequate insight into the substances present in the environment and how these can interfere with the proper functioning of natural hormones in humans

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs): Definition and Background. Biomagnification Bioaccumulation and LOEL. Molecular EDC Mechanisms. Assays for identifying EDCs.

EDCs and ovarian function: polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis. Leiomioma / Fibroma, premature puberty, decreased fertility and pregnancy probability, premature birth, underweight birth, menstrual cycle alteration.

EDCs and male reproductive health: congenital cryptorchidism, hypospadia, seed quality, testicular dysgeesis syndrome, testicular germ cell carcinoma.

EDCs and thyroid hormones: thyroid or thyroid nodules, Congenital hypothyroidism, Thyroiditis autoimmune,  Hyperthyroidism or Graves' disease, Thyroid cancer.

EDCs and cancer: hormone tumors Of the breast, endometrial, Of the ovaries, Of the testicles, Of the prostate and Of the thyroid.

EDCs and alterations of lipid homeostasis.
