The course deals with the problem of ship controllability.
The different approaches for the assessment of ship manoeuvrability characteristics will be covered, introducing the basic equation of motion and considering experimental and numerical approaches.
Current IMO requirements will be presented, together with the standard manoeuvres adopted for the assessment of ship manoeuvrability.
Definition of the basic motion equations and of the hydrodynamic characteristics which affect the ship behaviour in terms of manoeuvrability.
Theory and classwork.
During classwork a simplified manoeuvrability simulator will be developed (in Excel and successively in Simulink)

SHIP CONTROLLABILITY
The student will be evaluated by means of an oral examination on all the course program. There are three exams in summer (June, July, September) and two in winter (January and February), plus some additional exams during year to be agreed with the professor.
The exam will regard coursework had during the lectures and theory (usually two questions).
The oral exam will consist in the verification of coursework carried out during lectures and in the verification of the level of knowledge gained by the student. The oral exam moreover will allow to evaluate the communicating skills of the student.
The students have to sign up for the exams via the online website.
