The different approaches for the assessment of ship manoeuvrability characteristics will be covered, introducing the basic equation of motion and considering experimental and numerical approaches. Current IMO requirements will be presented, together with the standard manoeuvres adopted for the assessment of ship manoeuvrability. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Definition of the basic motion equations and of the hydrodynamic characteristics which affect the ship behaviour in terms of manoeuvrability. TEACHING METHODS Theory and classwork. During classwork a simplified manoeuvrability simulator will be developed (in Excel and successively in Simulink) SYLLABUS/CONTENT Governing equations Straight line / Directional / Positional stability Manoeuvring characteristics and standard manoeuvres Existing rules IMO (requirements, Pilot card, Wheelhouse poster, Manoeuvring booklet) NATO (ANEP – STANAG) - RINAMIL Model tests Free running model tests Captive model tests Non linear equations SNAME Model MMG Model Regressions Steering devices Rudder (open water) Rudder (interaction effects) Rudder design Alternative (active) steering devices (Azipod, WJ, etc) Appendages effects System Identification Speed variation Slow speed manoeuvrability Manoeuvrability in shallow and restricted waters RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY Notes of the lecturer Principles of Naval Architecture (PNA) Vol.3 TEACHERS AND EXAM BOARD MICHELE VIVIANI Ricevimento: Students are recieved on appointment, contacting via e-mail (michele.viviani@unige.it) or phone (010 3532547) Exam Board MICHELE VIVIANI (President) MARCO FERRANDO PAOLA GUALENI CARLO PODENZANA BONVINO LESSONS LESSONS START As indicated in official timetable Class schedule SHIP CONTROLLABILITY EXAMS EXAM DESCRIPTION The student will be evaluated by means of an oral examination on all the course program. There are three exams in summer (June, July, September) and two in winter (January and February), plus some additional exams during year to be agreed with the professor. The exam will regard coursework had during the lectures and theory (usually two questions). ASSESSMENT METHODS The oral exam will consist in the verification of coursework carried out during lectures and in the verification of the level of knowledge gained by the student. The oral exam moreover will allow to evaluate the communicating skills of the student.
