OVERVIEW

The objective of this module is to provide knowledge about the principles of radar and sonar systems, as well as magnetic and infrared measurement systems, and of their interaction with a ship structure, with special emphasis on acoustic and electromagnetic emission from the ship

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The student will possess the ability to understand an evaluation of the underwater noise, radar response, infrared emission and magnetic signature and of a ship, and to reason about the causes that govern them.

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures and seminars of industry professionals, for an amount of 50 hours

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Based on the concepts ruling the generation and propagation of elastic and electromagnetic wave fields, the course describes the characterization and the evaluation of the signature produced by a specific ship, including acoustic, electromagnetic, magnetic, and infrared components. Moreover, the relation between the ship signature and the probability of ship detection by means of radar and sonar systems, as well as by means of magnetometers and thermocameras, is analyzed
