OVERVIEW

The course aims to provide the student with the knowledge needed to map the hazard due to floods and flash floods. Satellite flood monitoring techniques in support of emergency phases will also be explored t

The objectives are achieved through lessons, practical exercises and seminars on specific topics.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course will firstly address the principles of hydrology and hydraulics of extremes. In detail: the scales of hydrology and hydraulics; the methods for the analysis of hydrometeorological data, the definition of critical events, hydrological and hydraulic models for floods (empirical and physically based) and droughts. Later the problem of mapping of flood hazard will be addressed, by identifying the specific problems linked to the different sizes of watersheds and proposing different methods of solution, in function of the objective of the analysis (detailed evaluation, country profiles, etc ..) In particular, we will analyse both empirical and physically based methods for flood hazard mapping. Finally, methods for mapping of flooded areas produced by actual events for recovery mapping will be presented. At the end of the course students will be able to tackle the problem of flood mapping at various spatial scales, finalised both to risk and to recovery (real events) mapping.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to provide the student with the theoretical knowledge and methodological bases of flood and flash flood hazard mapping

The student must be able to produce hazard maps suitable for assessing the risk at different scales. For this reason practical exercises will be carried out, which will put the student in touch with the problems that can be encountered in real contexts.

The techniques for hazard mapping based on geomorphological methods will also be investigated.

We will mention the role of hazard mapping for the support of the emergency management phases and the European regulations on risk mapping.

At the end of the course the students will be able to face the problem of flood hazard mapping at various spatial scales, aimed at the assessment of the hydraulic risk for the support to the different phases of the emergency.

TEACHING METHODS

- lessons

- practical exercises

- seminars of experts in specific topics

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The topics covered by the course are so subdivided

Principles of hydrology and hydraulics of extremes: scales of hydrology and hydraulic ; Methods for hydrometeorological data analysis for modeling of extremes, empirical and physically based hydrologic and hydraulic models for flooding.

Flood hazard mapping: specific problems related to the different scales of river basins and different solution methods depending on the objective of the analysis (detailed evaluation, national profiles, etc.). In particular, we will analyze empirical and physically based flood hazard mapping methods.

The European floods directive: outline of the content of the European "floods" directive n. 2007/60 / EC of 23 October 2007 and some technical solutions for its implementation.
