OVERVIEW

The focus of teaching is the Byzantine empire and its relevance in the history of Mediterranean,  related both to Western and Islamic history.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Students will have a grasp of the problems connected with the development of political, economic and cultural relations in the Mediterranean; they will study maritime societies in Middle Ages. Students will get acquainted with sources, research methods and updates in historiography related to specific topics.

For students taking the 6 CFU course

At the end of teaching students should gain:

• knowledge of development of Byzantine history and of institution of the Empire;
• skills in  showing  a source related to Byzantine History;
• ability in showing outcomes of  their  own researches to classmates.

For students taking the 9 CFU course

At the end of the teaching the students should gain:

• knowledge of  the development of Byzantine history and of institution of the Empire;
• skills in  showing  a source related to Byzantine History;
• competence  in describing a specific situation related to the History of the Mediterranean;
• ability in investigating  journals for Byzantine History or Mediterranean History;
• ability in showing  outcomes of their own research to the classmates.

PREREQUISITES

Positive curriculum and strong interest for history.

TEACHING METHODS

For students taking the 6- CFU course: classes for total 36 hours  about the main subjects of Byzantine history and  seminars about specific topics.

For students taking the 9-CFU course: classes for total 54 hours about the main subject of Byzantine history, seminar about specific topics,  discussions about students’ investigations.

For attending students taking the 6-CFU course

Fundamentals of Byzantine History (see books mentioned in Bibliography- 1)  

For non attending students taking the 6 CFU course Fundamentals of Byzantine History (see books mentioned in Bibliography- 1)  + two passages of Byzantine sources  to be requested to the teacher.

For attending students taking the 9-CFU course

Fundamentals of Byzantine History  (see books mentioned in Bibliography-1) + the outcomes of investigations  assigned during classes.

For non attending students taking the 9-CFU course: fundamentals of Byzantine History (see books mentioned in Bibliography- 1) + passages of two Byzantine sources to be requested to the teacher + reading one book  about Mediterranean topics (choice it among the texts mentioned in Bibliography- 2).

ASSESSMENT METHODS

For attending students, assessment will be based on the participation to discussions, seminars and on the oral exam.  Non attending students will have to take the final oral exam, which will cover a specific program to be agreed upon with the teacher.
