The main objective of the course is to enable future teachers to acquire 1) the basic concepts of of both infectious diseases and chronic-degenerative illnesses in Europe and Italy and their health, economic and social burden; 2) the basic concepts of health education and promotion.
At the end of the course, students must possess adequate knowledge of infectious diseases and chronic-degenerative illnesses prevention and health promotion.
At the end of the course, students must possess adequate knowledge on the epidemiology and prevention of the main infectious diseases and chronic-degenerative illnesses which affect the health status of the Italian population.
Students must have acquired knowledge on the value of disease prevention and environmental protection and must have the skills required in order to design and construct educational intervention for health promotion or disease prevention.
They must therefore show that they have understood that prevention is fundamental to safeguarding the health of both the individual and the community.

The concept of health. From Healthcare to health education: ethics, social and regulatory elements. Basic concept of epidemiology (epidemiological measures and studies). Epidemiology as a basis for the design of health promotion interventions.
Primary, secondary and tertiary prevention. Epidemiology and prevention of the principal infectious diseases. Italian National Prevention Plain. Italian National Immunization Plain. Epidemiology and prevention of chronic-degenerative illnesses with particular attention to cardiovascular diseases and tumors. School hygiene. Hygiene of the indoor environment. Environmental hygiene: water purification treatments, waste disposal and air pollution. Elementary first aid.

Obligatory written examination consisting of 30 “closed-answer” questions with only one correct answer and of one “open” question. Oral examination on request by the student, in order to improve the score obtained in the written examination. Assessment of the educational projects carried out during group activities.
The written format has been adopted in order to ensure that the knowledge acquired during the entire course is assessed in an objective manner. This modality is deemed to be able to correctly evaluate the achievement of both the general and specific training objectives.
