Understanding the main features of bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic diseases.
Apply knowledge on collecting medical history and clinical evaluation, laboratory and imaging tests to the diagnosis of infectious diseases
Acquire skills on prophylaxis and treatment of the most important infectious diseases
• Infectious Diseases will be taught from two different but not mutual exclusive perspectives, starting both from the targeted organ (pneumonia, meningitis, bacteraemia, etc.), and from the causative agent/s of the infection.
• The recognition of clinical presentations of infectious diseases and septic syndromes will be dealt with extensively, leading students and young doctors to recognize emergencies in Infectious Diseases (sepsis, meningitis) and to follow a reasoned diagnostic algorithm
• The Integrated Course will include both lectures and presentation of clinical cases
• Particular attention will be paid to the appropriate use of antimicrobials (antimicrobial stewardship) and the risk of development of antimicrobial resistance
• Other important topics include Emerging Infectious Diseases, Sexually Transmitted Diseases and HIV infection
S
Frontal lessons
Seminars (active participation of students is essential)
Group work
The teaching will cover 60 hours of frontal lessons (30 infectious diseases, 30 microbiology) on all arguments included in the program and additional 50 hours (2 CFU) of practical exercises (apprenticeship) in infectious diseases. Practical activities will be carried out at the Infectious Diseases Clinic of the University of Genoa. During practical activities the students will discuss clinical cases with Infectious Diseases specialists.
Goals of the training:
To acquire knowledge on microbiologic diagnosis of infections.
To acquire knowledge of appropriate microbiological procedures, with particular attention to the appropriateness of tests and to result interpretations
Infectious Diseases programme:
• Overview of infectious diseases; instrumental clinical diagnostics
• Healthcare-associated infections and infections in the immunocompromised patient
• Defense mechanisms against infectious diseases.
• Herpesvirus infections
• Exanthematic diseases
• Gastroenteritis-viral hepatitis
• Sexually transmitted diseases - Genitourinary infections
• Malaria and other tropical diseases
• Infectious diseases of the respiratory system; flu, tuberculosis
• Infections in the newborn
• Infections related to biological drugs
• Sepsis, septic shock, meningitis, endocarditis
• HIV - AIDS
• Arthropod diseases
• Infections of the skin and soft tissues
• Emerging infections: Ebola, Zika, Dengue, etc ...
• Antimicrobial stewardship: use of antibiotics and resistances

Oral examination (according to calendar available on the dedicated website)
Learning will be assessed only by means of the final oral examination .
All students will be required to obtain a minimun score of 18/30.
To obtain this result, students must demonstrate to have acquired:
-knowledge on clinical presentation, diagnosis and prophylaxis, together with therapeutic approach to the main infectious diseases.
-skills on differential diagnosis and rational use of laboratory tests and imaging resources
-skills on principles of antimicrobial treatment
-skills on the appropriate use of antibiotic treatment and on the impact of the inappropriate antibiotic prescription on the emergence of antibiotic resistance
The final score will be determined by:
-ability to face in a critical manner to all the arguments discussed during the examination
-quality of exposure
-use of an appropriate vocabulary
The maximum score (30/30 lode) will be given in case of excellence.
Students can arrange an appointment with teachers by e-mail
