OVERVIEW

Acquire skills on the diagnosis of infections.

Students will be divided into groups for both theoretical and practical activities. All the activities. will be carried out at the Infectious Diseases Clinic of the University of Genoa under the supervision of the chief of the center.  

AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The internship is a form of educational work with a tutor. All practical activities will be carried out under the supervision of the teacher.

Students must be able to carry out all activities of diagnosis and to formulate a treatment proposal autonomously. The goal of the internship is to acquire knowledge on the most common infectious diseases, and to improve diagnostic and therapeutic skills.

Moreover, the internship will allow students to acquire principles for the management of less common infections who requires Infectious Diseases specialist consultation.

TEACHING METHODS

Internship 1 CFU will be given every week of internship, that include both frontal lessons and practical activities

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Epidemiology,  clinical presentation and diagnosis of infectious diseases.

Principles of antimicrobial chemotherapy, with focus on the appropriateness of antibiotic prescription and on the risk of developing antibiotic resistance.

Diagnosis of infections in immunocompents and special patients populations, like migrants and travelers.

Rational use of laboratory tests and imaging procedures

Primary and secondary prevention of infectious diseases.

Skills will be evaluated during practical activities.

The student must demonstrate to have acquired knowledge on most common human infections, clinical diagnosis and empiric antimicrobial treatment.

The student must demonstrate to have acquired knowledge on the approach to less common infections who usually require the intervention of Infectious Diseases specialist.
