OVERVIEW

Botany studies the various aspects of plant life, including the plant cell, the different organization levels, the morphological and anatomical structure of plants, the mechanisms of development and reproduction, the relationships between structure and function. Botany also concerns plant biodiversity in natural environments, main evolutionary lines and taxa, especially in relation to Spermatophyta.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course provides basic notions on the plant cell, plant tissues and organs, development mechanisms, and reporduction. The course provides knowledge on major evolutionary lines, rules of botanical taxonomy, main taxa, features of the main Families of the Italian flora and the use of dichotomous keys for their identification. The importance of Biodiversity is also illustrated.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The examination consists of three in itinere tests, concerning general botany, systematic botany, and laboratory exercises. Admission to in itinere tests requires presence to at least 70% of lessons and 75% of laboratory sessions. The final exam requires  the presentation of a small herbarium; the final score is a weighted mean of the scores of the in itinere tests. Partial scores are valid until the summer exam session (June, July and September) of the same academic year.

Students who do not pass in itinere tests must take an oral exam on the whole set of topics of the course.

Students who pass only one of the general botany or systematic botany tests can take the missing test with a single attempt within the end of July of the same academic year.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The examination consists of three in itinere tests, concerning general botany, systematic botany, and laboratory exercises. The final exam consists in the presentation of a small herbarium.

Students who do not pass in itinere tests must take an oral exam on the whole set of topics of the course, including the description of an anatomical section and the identification of plant samples. The oral examination will evaluate not only if the student has reached an adequate level of knowlodge, but if he has acquire the ability to link structure and functions in plants.
