OVERVIEW

The Course Structural Dynamics II provides advanced tools of Structural Dynamics for the analysis of the dynamic response of structures to random excitation. Furthermore, some basics on the dynamic behaviour of nonlinear systems and structural identification are provided.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of the course is to provide the students with the tools for the statistical characterization of the dynamic response of structures to stationary random excitation. Time and frequency domain analyses are introduced, together with Monte Carlo simulation techniques and signal processing. Furthermore, basic knowledge for the implementation and use of simple techniques for the experimental and operational modal analysis of structures is provided.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course provides advanced tools of structural dynamics, including the random dynamic response of structures, an introduction to nonlinear dynamical systems, and some bases on experimental and operational modal analysis of structures. The first part of the course provides the basic tools of probability theory and random processes. The conceptual and mathematical tools are applied in numerical exercises (analysis and manipulation of random quantities through Matlab numerical codes). The second part of the course deals with the characterization of the random dynamic response of single and multi-degree-of-freedom systems. Furthermore, some typical features of nonlinear dynamical systems are shown and basic techniques for the experimental and operational modal analysis of structures will be tackled. Some of the topics are propaedeutic to the course of Wind Engineering.

TEACHING METHODS

The course is organized in class teaching, computer lab and experimental laboratory.
