At the end of the course the student must have acquired the methodologies and tools to deal directly, on a specialized level, the interpretation and analysis of Latin texts, on the linguistic, stylistic-rhetorical, thematic and historical-literary level, with particular attention to the parallels and intersections between literature and visual arts.
Lectures and seminar discussion
The Liber Spectaculorum of Martial. Poetic collection, the Flavian Amphitheater and the shows: forms of epigrammatic experimentalism and imperial propaganda.
A first part of the course will be devoted to an introduction to the main problems related to the cultural and literary personality of Marziale and to a brief overview of the history of the epigram in Greek-Latin culture; the second part of the course will therefore be dedicated to analyzing the issues of great interest related to the circumstances of composition and publication of the Liber Spectaculorum, linked to the inauguration of the Flavian Amphitheater called the Colosseum, and a poetic instrument of extraordinary ability at the service of imperial propaganda .

LATIN LITERATURE (LM)
The exam will first examine the student's competences regarding the Latin language, and will focus in particular on the ascertainment of stylistic, rhetorical and interpretative skills through the translation and exegesis of the Latin texts in the program. Part of the evaluation will also be based on possible seminar work exposed by the students during the course.
Oral exam possibly preceded by a seminar work presented orally and delivered in written form to the teacher during the course.
The basic threshold will consist of sufficient proficiency in the Latin language, sufficient knowledge of both the work of Martial, with particular regard to the Liber Spectaculorum, as well as of the other texts in the program, and the related literary and pohistorical-cultural issues dealt with during the course.
The threshold of excellence will consist of a solid competence in the Latin language, an excellent knowledge of both the work of Martial, with particular regard to the Liber Spectaculorum, as well as other texts in the program, and the related literary and historical-cultural issues dealt with during the course.
The frequency is strongly recommended: an active frequency of the lessons, with preparation of the passages from time to time addressed, will be evaluated during the exam.
Those who for serious reasons can not attend must contact the teacher within the first month of the course.
