AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

       A relevant contribution to the knowledge of the Roman world is giving by direct sources; between them Latin epigraphy plays a fundamental role, which allows to identify a dinamic landscape of Roman civilization, including minors but not negligible details regarding  this culture.

A working knowledge of Latin is not requirement for the course of study.

Learning outcomes

The main purpose of the course is to provide theoretical and practical knowledge needed to read, translate and understand the epigraphical messages of the Roman era (known as the writing civilization), in their variety.

        At the same time another purpose of the course is to show and deepen the historical, institutional, social, economic, cultural aspects contained in every epigraphical document, contextualizing them in the bigger stage of the ancient world, especially of the Roman era.

During the course several trips will take place with practice exercises regarding the detecting and the cataloguing (hard copy and electronic) of epigraphical documentation exposed in museums and collections of Liguria and Piemonte.

At the end of the course the students should gain:

         - reading, translation, interpretation, dating some epigraphical documents;   - classification of the main categories of inscribed monuments and their writing forms; - analysis  of historical, institutional, economic, social and cultural aspects included in each document; - contextualization of the epigraphical document in the bigger stage of the ancient world, especially of the Roman era; - orientation in bibliographical research and how to supplement and support with additional sources.

TEACHING METHODS

The course will be made by frontal classes teaching for total of 36 hours and seminary activities (as the ones that take place in the museum and archaeological sites).

During the class adeguate material will be given to the attendants useful to read, learn and translate the epigraphical text, inscribed on the monument, whose photograph will be given on hard copy and Power Point.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

For students taking the course for 6 cfu

            1. Discipline definition and its interdisciplinary areas. 2 The big collections and the epigraphical data banks. 3 The alphabet. 4. The names of the Roman man. 5. The funerary epigraphy. 6. The senatorial, equestrian, civic careers. 7. The imperial titulature. 8.The classification of inscriptions. 9. Epigraphy, archaeology and history: Roman cities of Liguria. 10. Epigraphy and cinema: the cinematographic mistakes in historic roman movies. 11. Signs of didatics of Epigraphy.

Laboratorio viaggiante di Epigrafia Latina

     During the course several workshops and tours will take place, with practice exercitations, in the main museums and archaeological sites of Liguria.

For 2018-2019 the following trips are potentially scheduled:

Civico Museo Archeologico di Pegli (week c.w. February 25th till March 1st)

Scavi di Libarna (week c.w. March 4th till 8th)

Museo Navale di Albenga (week c.w. March 11th till 15th)

Ventimiglia (week c.w. March 25th till 30th, two days).

         During the academic year it is foreseen a workshop regarding ‘instrumentum inscriptum’ held by doc. Viviana Pettirossi, following the request of at least two attendants.

The non attending students are requested to keep in contact with the professor.

For the students attending the course the notes taken during the class and during the visits in the museums and archaeological sites will be sufficient.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Verbal exam. On line registration to the exam via the Ateneo website will be mandatory.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The acquisition of the basic methodologies will be tested in order to achieve the objectives, as well as the knowledge of both the main characteristics of writing, and both the main categories of epigraphical documents, especially public and institutionals, and both bibliographical research instruments, with knowledge of the public and private institutions detectable in the given inscription documents.

The correct reading and interpretation of epigraphical text, object of the exam, allows to access an eventual excellence level.

 The following skills will be verified:

         - reading, translating, interpretation and dating of epigraphical texts;

         - analysis  of historical, institutional, economic, social and cultural aspects included in each document;

          - contextualization of the epigraphical document in the bigger stage of the ancient world, especially of the Roman era.

          - orientation in bibliographical research and how to supplement and support with additional sources.
