Developmental biology (DB) studies events from fertilization to adult and it represents the basis for the study of evolutionary biology that, driven by selection, proceeds under development constraints. This class has been focus on body axes, neurogenesis evolution and cellular differentiation. In the field of cell biology, this class regards aspects of particular interests in DB concerning the cell structure and organization, gene expression regulation, differentiation and stem cell biology.
This class aims at deepening into the following items:
· The cellular components and processes driving the structure, organization, specialization and cell movement
· The cellular mechanisms underlying gene expression regulation, mainly focusing on the role played by microRNA in post-transcriptional and post-translational regulation.
· The experimental approaches in cell biology for the study of the above listed mechanisms in eukaryotic cells.
· The determination of body axes in different model organisms, both invertebrates and vertebrates
· The patterns of structures differentiation from the three embryonic layers focusing also on adult stem cells.
To efficiently deal with the class contents, students need to have reached sufficient information in genetics, cytology and histology, comparative anatomy and developmental biology.
