OVERVIEW

Applied Geomorphology plays a key role in the Engineering Geology Science because it provides the basic knowledge and practices indispensable to recognize geomorphological hazard processes. The knowledge of traditional and innovative techniques for the geomorphological mapping  allows to apply Geomorphology for: design of civil and environmental engineering works; hydraulic-forestry arrangements; urban and land planning; cultural heritage sites and landscape

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

To provide knowledge on fields of application of geomorphology with special reference to land planning and civil-environmental engineering activities. To provide knowledge on methods of analysis and evaluation of geo-hydrological hazard and risk, including the use of geographic information systems. To explain the role of engineering geomorphological mapping in the basic cartography for land management, for hazard evaluation and geo-hydrological risk reduction. To explain and discuss the main geo-hydrological hazards and associated risks of the Ligurian environment, for either coastal and hilly-mountainous areas.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The attendance and participation in the training activities will allow the student to acquire general knowledge of applied geomorphology as specific skills of the geologist consultant in order to interact with other practitioners working on: land planning and management;  identification of prevention measures for the geo-hydrological risk reduction.

In detail the student will be able to: know the basic methods for the geomorphological survey; reading and comprehension of geomorphological maps, derive further geo-thematic cartography aimed at representing geo-hydrological hazards; identify the most appropriate techniques for monitoring phenomena of geo-hydrological hazards; performing the results of geo-hydrological phenomena monitoring and using them for the purposes of risk mitigation; critically evaluating the data collected during the survey, both directly on-site, using existing cartography, or through remote sensing, to develop scientific and technical analysis; preparing scientific and geomorphological-technical reports

PREREQUISITES

The following basic knowledge of physical geography and geomorphology is required to deal effectively with the teaching content: 1) litho-structural landforms, 2) gravitative landforms, 3) fluvial landforms, 4) karst landforms, 5) coastal landforms, 6) man-made landforms.

TEACHING METHODS

Teaching includes frontal lessons, classroom exercises, on-site surveying, educational tours.

The teaching of applied geomorphology is carried out with a practical approach to ensure the immediate understanding of the subject in technical and applicative terms, using several exercises, activities for the verification of acquired knowledge, research and investigations. Support activities to teaching by Geologist consultans, Geologists employed by public administrations, researchers of the National Research Council, Institute for geo-hydrological Protection.

The frontal lessons in the classroom are delivered through multimedia presentations.

The classroom exercises are aimed at applying the theoretical knowledge acquired during the frontal and surveying lessons on site. In particular, the following are envisaged: reading and comprehension of geomorphological maps; realization of geomorphological maps from existing studies and available from scientific and technical literature; realization of original geomorphological map obtained from on-site survey; realization of original geomorphological map in an urban environment through multi-temporal cartographic comparison and drills database; development of applied geomorphological themes proposed for the Geologist qualifying examination.

The exercises on-site will be carried out mainly in the Genoese territory and aimed at: the identification of the landforms due to gravity, running waters, man-made; the recognition of geo-hydrological hazards in small-size urbanized basins; the recognition of the landforms of the urban landscape in a part of Genoa city.

Educational tours are planned to building sites, urban areas and local authorities (land planning and civil protection).

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The program course includes the presentation and discussion of the following topics:

- Significant geo-hydrological events in Italy and Liguria: definition of geo-hydrological hazards, regulatory instruments regarding geological-hydraulic risks, tools and types of intervention.

- Causes of geo-hydrological hazards: gravitational movements and modelling of slopes, landslides and their classification, hydraulic phenomena.

- The regulatory instruments on hydrogeological risk.

- Tools and measures for risk reduction: Basin Master Plan (PAI), Environmental Education, Geomorphological monitoring of the territory, Bio-engineering interventions, Interventions to reduce runoff erosion, Interventions for surface stabilization, Interventions through support works, Interventions for protection from rock falls, Drainage works, Interventions on river beds.

- Techniques for detecting and mapping geomorphological dynamics, with particular reference to geo-hydrological hazards, classification and symbology.

All slides used during the lessons and other educational materials will be available on AulaWeb at the end of each cycle of lectures/exercises in the classroom.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The final test consists of a practical test and an oral test.

The practical test consists in the writing of an exercise similar to that of the qualifying examination to the Geologist consultant, with regard to applied-geomorphology issues. In particular, a scientific-technical report will be drawn up with: geographical classification; geological and dynamic geomorphological structure; identification of geo-hydrological hazards; monitoring activities; guidelines for the geo-hydrological risk reduction; final remarks.

The practical test is passed if the student obtains a mark greater than or equal to 18/30.

The oral exam consists in the discussion of the practical test and in the verification of the learning of the subjects treated during the teaching, which are part of the program course.

The final mark is obtained from the arithmetic mean of the marks of the practical and oral tests. The oral test may be taken in the same call as the practical test or in subsequent calls published on the UNIGE website.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The methods for the final test preparation and the levels of detail required will be provided during the lessons.

The practical test will verify the ability to read, understand and realize geomorphological maps aimed at land and urban planning, and the identification of geo-hydrological hazards.

The student should be able to link the knowledge gained during the classroom exercise activities with that provided during the frontal lessons by applying it to case studies developed during the on-site exercises.

The oral test concerns the discussion of the practical test and aims to evaluate the level of knowledge achieved, the ability to recall theoretical notions by applying them to real contexts. The ability to present the arguments and the use of correct scientific terminology are also assessed.
