OVERVIEW

In a globalized and multicultural world, knowledge of international relations is not only useful but also necessary in the field of mass media and the pursuit of professions related to the vast world of communication. The course aims to provide students with an in-depth analysis of the crucial junctures of the twentieth century and third millenniums using the analytical tools of Cultural History and Public History, with particular reference to the world of cinema and television.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

In a globalized and multicultural world, the knowledge of international relations is useful and necessary in the sphere of media studies and in undertaking jobs related to the vast area of communication. The course is aimed at providing students with an in-depth analysis of the turning points in the history of 20th century and the third millennium by using the analytic devices of Cultural History as well the Global History, with special regard to film-making and TV; students will also be given the ability to use knowledge and methodologies for specific class case studies and individual or group work.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of the course is to study the themes of the history of international relations of the twentieth century and the third millennium through the narratives of television and especially of cinema, comparing them with the academic acquisitions of historiography.

TEACHING METHODS

The course includes 27 two-hour lectures; during the lectures slides will be projected, documents distributed, analyzed sequences of documentaries and feature films, and discussions organized. Attending students will also present individual research on lesson topics.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The program provides an analysis of the main topics of international politics of the twentieth and third millenniums: from the First to the Second World War, from Post-War Reconstruction to the Cold War, from the process of European integration to Decolonization, the Movement of non-Aligned to the Distension, from the entrance in the world politics of Maoist China and the India of Nehru, from the Iranian revolution to the fall of the Berlin Wall and German reunification, from globalization to the destabilization of the Middle East, to latest environmental and climatic emergencies).

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam consists of an oral test, which lasts 20-30 minutes, in order to assess the level of knowledge of the subject acquired by the student. The Commission is chaired by the lecturer.
