OVERVIEW

The course introduces the student to laboratory techniques for the polymerization and characterization of polymeric materials, composites and lubricating oils.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of the course is to give knowledges about the polymerization methods and the characterization of polymer materials, composites and lubrificants.

TEACHING METHODS

In presence with attendance of laboratory class required. Slides of the course on Aulaweb.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Mod. I - 6 CFU

Motor oil and additives: viscosity measurements by Hoppler and Engler viscosimeters, viscosity index by Cannon-Fenske viscosimeter, flash point, density measurements.

Gasoline: density measurements, ASTM distillation, flammability, heating value.

Preparation of polymeric composite and nanocomposite.

Polymer and composite material mechanical properties evaluation.

Mod. II - 6 CFU

Synthesis of polymers in bulk and emulsion. Purification of monomer and initiator; correlation between synthetic parameters as monomer and initiator concentration etc. with yield and molecular weight of polymers. Polymers fractionation.

Characterization, as viscosimetric, spectroscopic and thermal measurements of synthesized polymers. Polymer mixing. Measurement of superficial properties of polymeric films, by determination of contact angle.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Oral examination (30%) and evaluation of laboratory classes (30%) and laboratory reports (40%).

The oral examination is conducted by two professors. They are able to verify the achievement of the learning outcomes. When these are not met, the student is invited to extend the study. To ensure uniformity between the examination topics and those actually carried out during the course, is present into the AulaWeb page a detailed program, so that students themselves can verify adherence.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Details on how to prepare for the exam and the degree of depth of each topic will be given during the lessons.

Both through the reports of the laboratory experiences and through the oral examination will be assessed the student's ability, to discuss critically on the topics exposed, to have elaborated the concepts presented in class and to have integrated the information coming from the various topics through personal study. The ability to describe the main polymer synthesis and characterization techniques in a clear way and with correct scientific terminology will be evaluated; the quality of the exposure will be considered.
