OVERVIEW

The course aims to deepen the themes and problems of the modern age in relation to the spatial context of the Italian peninsula, where historical events contributed to define a certain political-institutional order and a certain socio-economic framework. The basic knowledge will be the starting point to develop reflections on the pre-unification landscape that will highlight the differences between the different areas, but at the same time stimulate the search for strong systemic interconnections.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to deepen the themes and problems related to the history of the Italian peninsula and its states during the centuries of the ancient regime, through the definition and discussion of different historiographic traditions. The various aspects of a political-institutional, socio-economic and cultural nature will be examined with a diachronic approach and following specific paths for the different state realities. Direct exercises on sources will be proposed in order to stimulate a critical approach and to understand the actual development of historiographic paths in the field, with in-depth analysis related to the theme of health offices and prophylactic controls against plagues.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The teaching has three objectives:

1) to introduce students to the history of the ancient Italian States, against the background of the more general modern history that they have already studied (at different levels) in high schools and in the first university cycle

2) to reflect on the similarity (and on the specificities) that a comparison between the events of the ancient Italian States and those of the other European States of the same centuries can highlight

3) to teach the historiographic traditions of the various state contexts and present the panorama of the sources on which they are based
