OVERVIEW

The theoretical basis of pragmatic analysis of texts will be illustrated and the salient characteristics of dialogue and main conversational mechanisms will be discussed. A basic knowledge of linguistics is required.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The general objective of the course is knowledge of the categories of pragmatic linguistics that most lend themselves to a connection with rhetoric and stylistic perspectives. The course aims to give students: a) knowledge of the principles of textuality and verifying their functioning on real texts; b) a better awareness of the mechanisms of text comprehension also in relation to the implicit dimension.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course gives students knowledge about the pragmatic dimensions of linguistic facts. In particular, it enables students to recognise the different aspects of textuality and the dialogic functioning of communicative exchanges in their multidimensionality.

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures and presentation of articles and materials also in the context of seminars.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

During the course the theoretical fundamentals and recent developments of linguistic and pragmatic analysis of discourse and texts will be discussed in an ethno- and socio-linguistic perspective. The salient characteristics of dialogue and main conversational mechanisms will be discussed. The dimension of textuality in its constituent elements and its contextualised functioning will be introduced. Articles will be presented and examples will be discussed in the context of seminars. Simone Turco will hold a seminar on the theme “Reported speech: analysis of texts”.

The bibliography for students who attend will be handed out during the course.
