OVERVIEW

The module, which aims to illustrate the governance of the EU governance in the post-Lisbon era, focuses on actors, decision-making process in the European Union.Theoretical perspectives will be combined with updated empirical analyses on the evolution of the EU, at the time of Brexit. A specific attention will be devoted to Foreing and Defense policies in Europe and to the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the EU, examining in details, strategies, approaches, tools and resources.

The module highlights key-issues, actors, decision-making process in the European Union, devoting a specific attention to Foreign and Defense policy, comparing the national and the EU perspective. The main goal is to provide basic knowledge on EU as a political system in order to address reasons, consequences and solutions to the current crisis of the EU. The module provides theoretical and practical skills to those interested in EU politics, with a specific attention devoted to Foreign and Defense in Europe. 

PREREQUISITES

A basic knowldge of the EU could be useful but it is not represents a vital prerequirement

TEACHING METHODS

Active–learning, role-playing, poster sessions will be adopted as a teaching method, especially to foster students’ participation. The module will provide also practical skills for students interested in career opportunities within the European Union. Several seminars with scholars, experts and practitioners will be organized.

The module is one of the first courses in Italy that adopts the approaches of the Foreign Policy Analysis.

Focus 4: The crisis in Ukraine and the EU sanctions

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Exam will be based on a written test (10 brief questions) plus an oral examination. 

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The written exam will assess the acquired knowledge in the field of EU politicla system, with a specific attention devoted to foreign and defense policy. The questions allow evaluatiing the students’ skills in addressing specific issues conceirng the EU and foreign and defense policy in Europe. The oral exam allows assessing the student’s capability in interpreting different scenarios and actors.
