OVERVIEW

The Environmental Hygiene course aims to provide students with the concepts of hygiene in environmental matters in order to better implement the activities aimed to the protection of the environment and human health.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to analyze the relationship between environment and health related to problems related to microbiological and chemical pollution of environmental matrices (air, water and soil). It provides students with the skills to assess the effects of pollutants on ecosystems and humans and to implement appropriate preventive measures for the maintenance of the health status of man and the environment.

The student will acquire adequate knowledge and skills to understand the human-environment relationship, the role of environmental risk factors and of the quality of environmental matrices in determining population health.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

ENVIRONMENT AND HUMAN HEALTH
Relationship between physical, biological, social and human health.
WATER
Waters for human consumption
Hygiene problems related to human use of water. Water in nature and the various sources of supply. The microbiological and chemical parameters indicated in the current legislation (DL 31/01 and subsequent amendments) for the assessment of potability. Guidelines for the quality of water for human consumption. Definition of quality standards and methods for their evaluation. Potability requirements. Judgement and controls of the potability of a water. Analysis and correction of the chemical, physical, organoleptic and biological characteristics of water. Methods of purification. Hygiene problems related to water purification processes.
Criteria for assessing the characteristics of natural mineral waters.
Main analytical techniques for hygienic water control: sampling methods and analytical methods (total Coliforms determination 37°, E. Coli, Enterococci, total bacterial load, P. aeruginosa, Legionella spp...)
Bathing waters
The microbiological and chemical parameters indicated in the current bathing water legislation (Directive 2006/7/EC of 15 February 2006). Definition of quality standards and methods for their evaluation.
Main analytical techniques for hygienic water control: sampling and analytical methods.
Epidemiological reflections of water pollution on human health.
