AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims at introducing students to the themes of population geography and migration, two topics that are essential for understanding and critically addressing some crucial aspects of the current migratory phenomena, linked to international relations and their impact on policies of the cooperation for the development. At the end of the course the student will know: the nature and the possibility of employment of the main demographic indices and indicators; the fundamental features of the history of the world population; the main factors and the forms assumed over time by international migratory movements. Consequently, the student will be able to use the basic tools of demography to understand and interpret the main lines of the history of the distribution of the world population and its dynamics, the migratory movements and their connections with environmental, economic, social and cultural factors. The students are expected to memorize a set of essential notions and definitions to identify, describe and analyze demographic and migratory phenomena. Secondly, they will have to know how to apply some basic statistical models and use the analytical tools made available by the historical-geo-cartographic sciences. Finally, he must be able to apply these tools to the analysis of the migratory phenomena that characterize the second half of the 20th century and the first two decades of the 21st century. In this way at the end of the course the students are expected to be able to evaluate and contextualize different types and modalities of migration, in order to mature the ability to formulate critical interpretations of the migratory phenomenon and of the different political interventions

TEACHING METHODS

The leectures will be in Italian. The participation to the lessons of testimonies and experts or operators in the sector is envisaged. The more markedly statistical parts of the program will be deepened by means of ad hoc seminar activities

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course will address the study to: the main components of the evolution of the human population. In particular, the focus will be put on: the space and strategies of demographic growth (reproductive strategies, mortality, nuptiality, fertility, mobility and migration); the demographic development between choice and constraint; relationships between demographic dynamics and resources; demographic dynamics and international migrations. A definition of: migrant will then be proposed. The attention will then be moved on to the description of the historically most relevant international migrations and to the contemporary ones subdivided by large regions - in Europe until 1945 and from 1945 to today, in the Americas, Asia and in the Pacific regions, in Africa and in the Middle East – to move on to an analysis of the relationships between demographic dynamics and development. Finally, the course will be centered on the issues of the acceleration of migratory phenomena during the nineteenth century, the reversal of the migratory cycle starting from the second half of the twentieth century, the relations between processes of globalization and migratory movements, and finally on the economic effects and social movements of contemporary migratory movements on the countries of origin and destination.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam will be oral, exclusively in Italian (also for non-Italian speaking students).

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The examination will be aimed at verifying: the knowledge of the topics covered in class and shown in the texts suggested in the bibliography; the ability of the student to establish correlations and analyze and discuss case studies.

The final mark will be function of: 80% of disciplinary knowledge and 20% of the argumentative capacity and fairness of the exposition.
