OVERVIEW

Thde Solid State Physical Chemistry course is a 4 CFU course with arguments related to the inorganic- chemical physics background.

In order to follow the lessons, the student must pass, before, the exams of Physics, Mathematics.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course has the target to supply to the student the molecular bases to understand, from a statistical point of view, the three laws of thermodynamics. The second target is the understanding of the electric and electronic behaviour of the solids ( metals and semiconductors).

PREREQUISITES

All the skills achieved for the courses of

Physical chemistry I

mathematics

General physics

are required

TEACHING METHODS

Oral lessons

The course in presented with the aid of slides (Aulaweb). The slides can be downloaded by the students before the beginning of the lessons.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

First part

Statistical thermodynamics: distinguishble and undistinguishable particles; Maxwell-Boltzmann approximation; macroscopic thermodynamic parameters calculated by statistical way (heat, work, Internal energy, entropy...); qualitative analysis of the Bose-einstein and Fermi-dirac statistics.

Second part

Electronic properties of solids; free electron theory; band theory in solids; electroinic specific heat; electrical conductivity; semiconductors and superconductors.
