The course aims at providing students with basic knowledge on Clinical Biochemistry, the clinical diagnostic and prognostic significance of the common laboratory tests exploring organ and tissue funtion.
At the end of the course, students will know the principal clinical-biochemistry indicators of organ and tissue function and will be able to identify out-of-range parameters and apply an analytical reasoning to critically evaluate the clinical-chemistry profile in relationship to the working risks.
Plenary lectures will present the laboratory tests described in the programme, the normal range of the values and their dynamic excursion during common organ and tissue diseases.
A number of simple clinical cases will be presented to allow students to train the clinical reasoning on the basis of evidence provided by the clinical laboratory tests.
BLOOD Blood cell count, electrophoretic profile of serum proteins and diagnostic value, common serum enzymes of diagnostic value, non-protein nitrogen, electrolytes.
LIVER FUNTION TESTS
Serum enzymes in the diagnosis of liver diseases, bilirubin and jaundice, laboratory tests in selected liver diseases (viral hepatitis, alcoholism, toxic liver diseases).
TEST EXPLORING GLUCOSE METABOLISM Causes of yper- and hypo-glycemia, diagnostic criteria of diabetes mellitus, gestational diabetes
TESTS EXPLORING LIPID METABOLISM Lipoprotein classification, dyslipidemic phenotypes, cardiovascula risk, laboratory diagnosis of AMI
URINEANALYSIS AND TESTS OF RENAL FUNCTION Physical-chemical urine analysis, indicators of glomerular and tubular malfunction
ENDOCRINOLOGY Steroid hormones, peptide hormones and hormonse derived from aminoacids: basal levels and conditions of hyper- and hypo-production. Lab tests exporing hormone blood and urine levels.
BLOOD GASES Normal values and modifications in selected conditions
VITAMINS Function in metabolism and principal diseases caused by deficiency.

multiple-choice test
A written exam (multiple-choice test) will verify acquisition of the knowledge relative to the topics dealt with during the course and the student's ability to critically evaluate precompiled answers, demonstrating independent reasoning. In particular, the "normal range" of the laboratory tests will be explored and their dynamic range under conditions of organ or tissue disease. Some questions will explore the capacity of the student to identify laboratory tests indicated to provide an answer in specific diagnostic settings.
